Steamboat Bill, Jr., 1928 - ★★★★★

STEAMBOAT BILL JR. (Charles Reisner / Buster Keaton, USA, 1928, 10 (was 9), R)

Things I noticed for the first time on what was my third viewing just in a theater of this well-canonized masterpiece, about an effete edumacated Boston pansy becoming a Real Man:

(1) Buster and his father have the same name (Canfield) as the rival family in OUR HOSPITALITY.

(2) In the hat-changing scene, Buster tosses off his trademark porkpie as ridiculous. (One of my college roomates walked in on me cracking up watching this scene and said it was the stupidest scene and I was being pretentious for laughing.)

(3) Something named the Stonewall Jackson is condemned and its operations canceled by the “Public Safety” Commission (this is only funny today).

(4) The Shot … arguably the most famous in silent-movie...
