Spanglish, 2004 - ★★½

Besides producing one of everyone’s favorite shows, The Simpsons, James L. Brooks’ work has remained quite prolific, but his projects have been sort of a blind spot for me, having only seen Broadcast News from his rather minuscule directorial docket. Yet out of one film, a viewer can garner the intricate dichotomy between style and substance. In story, romantic sparks spur between Holly Hunter’s Jane and William Hurt’s Tom Grunick who bears the anchorman look without the news knowledge, while Albert Brooks’ Aaron Altman — real newsman without the screen presence — carries a torch for Jane. Style and substance of romance behind the news desk and in parallel, style and substance in his filmmaking by relying on interactions within the frame rather than ostentatious aesthetics...
