Gone Girl, 2014 - ★★★★½

The tension between Amy and her hillbilly neighbors during her stint at the cabin is relatively unexciting, though I like the black humor in her procrastinating her suicide, plucking the “Kill Yourself” sticky notes off her calendar. Otherwise, this movie is a ton of pulpy fun. An unabashedly lurid and bleakly funny look at the fallout from the collapse of a relationship and a woman driven over the edge by the pressure to play different roles for different people. Done with a considerable dose of irony (love the bitter sarcasm in Pike’s narration and Amy’s theatrical flop into Nick’s arms when she gets home) and characteristically slick direction by Fincher. The comparisons to Basic Instinct are entirely apt.
