It's certainly disappointing to see one of if not my favorite television creators have what can only be described as a swing and a miss in their Directorial Debut. The signature Hawley motifs, metaphors, and aspect ratio shifts are all present. However a solid narrative and cohesive voice isn't. The film is presented as if it is important, but the importance of it never translates to the viewer. In fact the opposite occurs, but not in a clever look how Iris comes to understand that people are all just people way. It's like cement pad that's off level. Sure it's a film, but it's off. And it's offness isn't coherent or complimentary.
A disappointment but I'd nonetheless love to see him swing for the fences again. Preferably off a screenplay from one writer and one writer only. You can skip...
