The Players Club, 1998 - ★★★★

Rustic Americana of a different variety, Ice Cube's voice is distinctive and has a patina that is uncommon and bold. There's a lot to love in his Directorial Debut, it's a shame that he never continued on down this track. Though there are certainly some very big misses and flat out messed up some shots there is equally full bodied characters, naturalistic extended dialogue sequences, challenging themes, and comedic talent in both the writing and direction.

The cat fight sequence and the depictions of sexual violence are notable. The choice to cast himself in an explicitly condemnable role to communicate his narrative is what I look for in artists. There's a lot to both criticize and love here. I'd recommend it if you have a Netflix account and want to watch something off the beaten path.
