Mud, 2012 - ★★

I struggle so much with this one. It’s got bones that could be great but seems to intentionally drone on. Like when you speak to an old man about his presumably interesting life, but instead of getting to the good stuff he rambles on and won’t stop talking. It lacks and seems to intentionally shun the natural dramatic sensibilities that would allow a greater investment into its settings and characters. Slow cuts, minimalist score, dry acting (and you can tell it’s not bad acting; they’re directed to show as little emotion as possible). These things can work, but for a Huck Finn-esque coming of age story set in Arkansas?
