Mean Streets, 1973 - ★★★★★

This almost feels like an early Springsteen song come to life, something like "Incident on 57th St" or "Meeting Across the River," just a little slice of life about small time hoods doing small time sh*t and living their small time lives and not realizing that death is bearing down on them because they've all made a series of really bad choices.

It's fun seeing the little snippets of things that would show up in later Scorsese (e.g., the tracking shot across the bar that presaged that introduction shot in GOODFELLAS) and there's a propulsive energy to the thing that still feels vibrant and alive. The music helps it feel real. You just want to slap Johnny Boy on behalf of literally everyone in the movie. I dunno, good flick.
