I went into Midway wondering if they were going to do a Pearl Harbor and use the titular battle as a backdrop to some sh*tty love story. To my surprise, they did do a Pearl Harbor in the sense that they literally included a scene showing the Japanese surprise attack, and not only that, but they depicted several battle scenes around the Pacific, which as a fan of aviation films, I was pleasantly surprised.
The CGI is kind of sh*t, not going to lie, but the action for the most part was pretty solid. I don't recall any forced diversity, the US military was depicted as largely segregated (as it was at the time), so good job with that. The Japanese were Humanized a little bit too, which I liked as I always appreciate it when the enemy isn't just depicted as sneering, evil husks that are just there for the protagonists to blow up.
All and all, a pretty solid war film that didn't try to be anything but what it was. Its pretty ham-fisted so don't expect any "war bad" sh*t that you see in most modern movies, but at the very least its a good celebration of the tenacity and the power that the US military and its integral role in the Pacific.
