Reminiscence, 2021 - ★★★

Reminiscence has influences which include things like Inception and Minority Report. It has a healthy respect for noir with its visuals and characters (Rebecca Ferguson is a natural fit for a femme fatale and she does well). You could do worse!

There is some questionable story logic, and a fair bit of the dialogue and narration come across as awkward (perhaps an unsuccessful attempt to sound like noir?). It had me thinking “this is going to be bad, isn’t it” at the beginning but it won me over.

Hugh Jackman has to portray someone with trauma in his own past who lets himself be deceived. He then has to find what he’s looking for in other people’s memories.

It’s this device—the interesting ways it plays with the concept of memory—that makes it worth a look.
