“Why do you guys have to ruin everything?” This line, uttered by a borderline sexual predator after his hopes for a night of erotic adventure have been dashed, nicely sums up my own attitude while watching Promising Young Woman, a glistening gob of moral retardation starring Carey Mulligan as cinema’s lamest vigilante. Cassandra (Mulligan) is just a rude barista by day, but by night she prowls the singles bars posing as a drunken, vulnerable trollop to lure rapey men into trying to take advantage of her, at which point she straightens up and shocks them by revealing she isn’t helpless.
