I am about five years younger than Kenneth Branagh and was raised less than 150 miles from Belfast in a city divided (if less vigorously and violently) between the same two religiously-defined tribes. And we left our country at my father’s behest when I was a boy, if a bit further afield. My mother died a couple of weeks ago and BELFAST was the first movie I saw in a theater after that and I couldn’t escape the knowledge that my non-cinephile parents would very likely have at least been interested in this film and, other circumstances permitting, we’d’ve seen it together.
