Just when I was starting to think that Denis isn’t for me, I fall hard for this melancholic, minimally plotted, deeply felt drama. The story of the bond between a widowed father and his adult daughter, unreciprocated feelings between neighbors, and a retiree’s lost sense of purpose and resultant depression, Denis poetically weaves these different strands together into a poignant study of the difficulty in accepting change, letting go, moving on. Love everything from how the Ozu-esque pillow shots of the trains open the film up, to the sensitive performances and gentle pacing. Many to go, but my favorite Denis yet.

The spectacle is savage, the metacommentary delightful, and the pace bloodthirsty even if it is overlong. Did Michael Bay invent World Cinema or did the world just copy him? The answer is yes.

Didn't care for Reynold's here. Loved Laurent. The visuals are some the most beautiful and technically impressive I've seen all year. Broken nose rocket propelled grenade guy slow-mo is a top movie moment of the year for me. This is precisely the absurd spectacle I want to see Netflix generate. If they can make things that are anti high brow, maybe have something to say(I'm in the camp that thinks Bay is actually an astute filmmaker), and are absolutely gorgeous and fun to look at I'll be a lifetime subscriber.

A ridiculously high dosage of opulent and over-carbonated action filmmaking that flirts with self-parody, but lacks the conviction to really go there. None of it matters, not one of the jokes is even remotely funny, and Ryan Reynolds remains the worst. I like looking at shiny and expensive stuff though, sue me.

A fantastic dialogue driven mosaic piece that is equal parts play and storytelling. The camera almost seems of no consequence to the characters who breathe such life into the town. I can't imagine the story ending just because there's no more footage left to share, those same characters are still answering phones and shooing cars from parking lots in my mind.

a sprawling and formally whimsical mosaic of the various dramas playing out at and around a small-town community arts center, called The Bread Factory, and its adjacent institutions. the stakes are higher in part one (the center’s primary funding is at risk of being reallocated to a fancier new complex down the street, the artistic residence of a high-profile, high-concept performance artist couple from China), but the real fun comes in part two, where wang even more brazenly toys with his syntax and further blurs the line between performance and living. his is one of the more unique sensibilities i’ve encountered in some time; it’s a delicate balance of realism with playfulness and imagination, and is what gives this community’s story both its resonance and its charm (that, and a fabulous cast).
